Do you have a calling? Something you’ve always wanted to do but never have? Does this calling keep calling you, particularly when you’ve done all you can to forget about it.
I have this problem. It started years ago when I decided that I wanted to work in personal development. The year was 2001.
Since then I’ve done bits and pieces to head my calling. With varying levels of success. But somehow, something always gets in the way.
This year, I decided that it was now or never and since then, I’ve been looking at the reasons why this business hasn’t taken off in the same way my freelancing career has (no problem there).
And listening to Gabby (Bernstein) and Marie (Forleo) whilst trying to keep up with my exercise routine (also a challenge!), here’s what I’ve come up with.
I lack clarify
Yes, me. The person who tells you constantly that you have to be crystal clear about your goals, your vision, where you’re headed. I lack clarity.
Not clarity as to what I want. That’s clear. I lack clarity around the services I want to offer. Do I want to offer workshops, create online products, do some speaking? So I’m stuck. Confused services, confused audience, no clients. Period.
I made a decision last week to follow my own advice and get the resources I need to fix this. So, I’ve enrolled in Marie Forleo’s B-School. We start next week. I’m reallllly excited!
I’m not sure I can make a living doing what I dream of
It doesn’t matter that I can find 5,000 examples and more of people who make a living doing lots of stuff that ressembles what I want to do, I’m still not convinced. So I keep a toe in my other business and sometimes both my feet.
My old coach told me that she so wanted to be a coach and make money out of it that she drove miles to go and find clients.
So, I will get the clarity of service and I will get off my butt and start taking some big action.
All of this is resistance really
I’m reading a fantastic book about resistance called the War of Art. I’m not far into it but I’m hooked. Lacking clarity, having doubts, half committing, there just way to resist moving forward.
The author, Steven Pressfield, believes that anything that requires long term investment and does not yield immediate results is hard for us humans to achieve so we resist. However, ‘the more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more resistance we will feel towards pursuing it‘. Wow. I’ve been trying since 2001! That’s a lot of resistance… I’m definitely on the right track.
If you have a calling, a dream. If you keep getting stuck. I highly recommend Pressfield’s book. This space is much too short to give it justice.
Do you have a calling? Are you putting up lots of resistance? What are you going to do about that?
